Mumps, Causes of Mumps and Treatments

Mumps is a disease, usually of children, caused by a virus. With mumps, your salivary glands swell. Specifically, these are the parotid glands, and they are located below and in front of each ear. The virus is spread by direct contact with an infected person’s sneeze or cough.

Humans are the only known natural hosts.

Mumps in adolescent males may result in the development of orchitis, a painful inflammation of the testicles that can, in rare cases, result in sterility.

Before the advent of vaccination, whenever a child in the neighbourhood caught mumps mothers used to take their young sons

around to the patient’s home in the hope that the child would catchmumps.Mumps is a virus and thus will cannot be treated with antibiotics.Like most viral illnesses, mumps can be left to run its course andmost children and adults recover in 2-3 weeks as long as there are nocomplications.

Mumps is most common around the month of March. It usually appears in scattered individual cases, though there are occasional local epidemics among unvaccinated children. It’s less infectious than chickenpox or measles.

Causes Of Mumps

The mumps are caused by a paramyxovirus, which is spread from person to person by saliva droplets or direct contact with articles that have been contaminated with infected saliva.

The parotid glands (the salivary glands between the ear and the jaw)are usually involved. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 are most commonly infected, but the infection can occur in other age groups.

In older people, other organs may become involved including the testes, the central nervous system, the pancreas, the prostate, the breasts, and other organs. The incubation period is usually 12 to 24days.

The virus that causes mumps is harbored in the saliva and is spread by sneezing, coughing, and other direct contact with another person’s infected saliva.

Once the person is exposed to the virus, symptoms generally occur in 14-24 days. Initial symptoms include chills, headache, loss of appetite, and a lack of energy.

In children, the first sign of mumps is swelling of the salivary glands, but adults sometimes run a temperature and feel ill a couple of days before the glands enlarge.

At first, the swelling is often uncomfortable or painful. If the disease occurs after puberty, the testicles may become swollen and painful in males; a similar condition may affect the female ovaries, sometimes leading to sterility.

Treatments

There is no specific treatment for mumps. Ice or heat packs applied to the neck area and with acetaminophen (Tylenol) may help relieve pain. Do not give aspirin to children with a viral illness because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome.Warm salt water gargles, soft foods, and extra fluids may also help relieve symptoms.

Around twenty per cent of infected people will be affected so slightly that they will not even realise they have mumps. Mumps is a virus and thus will cannot be treated with antibiotics. Like most viral illnesses, mumps can be left to run its course and most children and adults recover in 2-3 weeks as long as there are no complications.

Treat the symptoms with paracetamol or ibuprofen. DO NOT USE ASPIRIN. Unless instructed by a doctor, don’t give aspirin to a child who has a viral illness as the use of aspirin in such cases can lead to the development of Reye Syndrome, a serious and potentially deadlyencephalitis-like illness.

Give plenty of fluids but avoid acidic fruit juices (lemonade, orange juice etc) as these can increase parotid pain. A child with mumps doesn’t need to stay in bed but should not go to school while still infectious. A doctor can advise when it is safe to return.

Hence Vajikarana Therapy is recommended in ayurveda for men who are above 20 and below 70 to maintain optimum sexual activity and number of healthy sperms. Vajikarana Therapy recommends herbal preparations which are aphrodisiac.

Constipation Remedies and How to Get Rid of Constipation

Constipation is a common problem of the digestive area. If the bowels do not move regularly or are not completely emptied and even after moving; you are constipated. Pain or heaviness in the abdomen, loss of appetite, drowsiness, nausea, pain in the lower legs and vertigo are some of the well known symptoms of constipation. Constipation leads to many diseases.

Following are few remedies of constipation ? Dietary fiber ? Increase the intake of fruit and vegetables (minimum of five servings of fruit or vegetables daily) to your diet. It is known to be the best way of adding fiber. Fiber supplements can also be used.

1. Hyperosmolar laxatives – These are indigestible, unobservable compounds. Hyperosmolar laxatives remain within the colon and preserve the water that already is in the colon. This results in softening of the stool. The most common hyperosmolar laxatives are lacunose, orbital, and polyethylene glycol and most importantly, these are available by prescription only. These laxatives has few side effects and considered to be safe for prolong use.

2. Lubricant laxatives- These contain mineral oil which resides within the intestine. It coats the particles of stool and apparently controls the removal of water from the stool which results in the stool to go softer. Since the long term use of mineral oil has several disadvantages, it is only used for the short-term healing of constipation. It can attract fat-soluble vitamins (from the intestine). If it is used for long periods, there can be vitamin deficiencies.

3. Stool softeners ? these are also called emollient laxatives which contain a compound which is a wetting agent called decussate. It betters the capability of water in the colon to go through and merge with stool. Thus the higher water (in the stool) leads to the softening of the stool. These are generally used in the long-term healing of constipation. It can take around a week’s time or more for decussate to be helpful. But even after you see no effect, the dose should be increased. These are generally used when stool has to soften for short duration. For example after childbirth, surgery, or heart attack.

4. Saline laxatives – These contain magnesium hydroxide, magnesium citrate and sodium phosphate which are non-absorbable ions. While remaining in the colon, these ions help water to be strained into the colon and help soften of the stool. These laxatives act very quickly but it is not recommended to use them on regular basis. Dehydration may occur due to the development of diarrhea with the use of this laxative. Milk of magnesia is the most regularly used and stronger of the saline laxatives.

You can adapt a number of lifestyle changes as a remedy for constipation. They are as follows -A) Get up early in the morning and go for a walk daily.B) Avoid tight clothes or belts. These can hold back your digestive system.C) Limit intake of tobacco, tea, coffee and hot spices.D) Don’t take daily naps and especially within 3 hours of eating.E) Fast at least once in a week.F) Make a schedule and stick to it because schedules work well with your body’s natural body clock.G) Exercise regularly for at least 20-25 minutes daily.

Recovery From Infections Is Easy by Use of Antibiotics

Recovery from infections is easy by the usage of antibiotics. The intake of this medication is a guaranteed treatment for all the infections caused by the bacteria. Whoever has used the antibiotics is able to get relief from the bacterial infections pretty easily. Antibiotics are the medications that are prepared from the other microorganisms that have the parasitic property against the other infecting agents. They are basically the antimicrobial compounds that treat the infections caused by the bacteria. There are some antibiotics that are even effective against the infections caused by fungi and protozoa. Antibiotics are not effective against the viral infections, in such cases you need to consult the doctor before using antibiotics because viral infections can become severe with the intake of the Antibiotics. Commonly the antibiotics are used against the bacterial infections.

The usage of the antibiotics was first mentioned by Sir Alexander Fleming who invented the first antibiotic, Penicillin. He got the noble prize for it and from that day bacterial infections were curable. Before this period lot of deaths were noted due to the bacterial infection. But antibiotics revolutionized the health industry by providing the guaranteed solution for the infections. The advances took place in the medical field that and the new branch of antibiotics known as semisynthetic was introduced. In this the antibiotics are manufactured from original compounds in the nature by the chemical synthetic process. This was the great invention in the field of antibiotics that made the production of this medication very easier. Antibiotic became a range of medicines that are compulsory in every medical Shoppe today.

Antibiotics are the medications that must be taken strictly only after consulting with the doctor. Remember that different antibiotics are used for the different bacterial infections. Suppose if you take the antibiotic that is not effective against the infections then there will not be any use of it. In fact this could make even the situation worst, if the particular antibiotic supports the growth of the bacterial colonies. Even doctors confirm the bacterial infections by the laboratory tests that are performed by the experts. Depending upon this doctors prescribe the antibiotic. So, the main point here is never use the antibiotic on your own. Take them only if prescribed by the doctor.

The classification of antibiotics is done on the basis of their action. The antibiotics that doesn’t kill the bacteria and just stop their multiplication are known as the bacteriostatic antibiotics. They are generally given at the preliminary phase of the treatment against the bacterial infections are not much severe and are at the development phase. The other types of antibiotics are known as bactericidal. These are the antibiotics that kill the bacteria causing the infection. They are treatment against the hazardous bacteria and generally used against the severe infections. Whatever may be the severity of your infection use the antibiotics to cure them. Antibiotics are assured treatment against the bacterial infections.

Today more than 100 different antibiotics are available in the market. Nearly all types of the bacterial infections are cured with the help of the antibiotics. Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria infections can be cured with the intake of antibiotic medicines. Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Fluroquinolones, Tetracyclines, and Macrolides are the most commonly prescribed antibiotics by the doctors, but only after confirming the bacterial infections. Some of the common side effects of the antibiotics include diarrhea, stomach pain, acidity, and nausea. But, don’t worry about these side effects as they are temporary and go off as your body gets accustomed to the dosage of antibiotic. Even your doctor may prescribe you some other medicine that will take care of these side effects. Thus, use the antibiotics to recover from infections easily.

Use Antibiotics Only For Bacterial Infections

Antibiotics are the medications that are specifically used against the bacterial infections. They are the best medicine to cure the bacterial infections. Nearly all the different types of the bacterial infections are being treated with the help of the antibiotics. Bactericidal and bacteriostatic are the two categories of antibiotics. Bactericidal antibiotics act directly by killing the bacterial infections. Bacteriostatic antibiotics act by stopping the multiplication of the bacterial infections. Bacteriostatic antibiotics are prescribed as the preliminary level of treatment, whereas bactericidal antibiotics are prescribed as final level treatment of bacterial infections. But, depending on your level of infection doctor may prescribe you directly bactericidal antibiotics.

Antibiotics are the medications that show effect only on the bacterial. So, use antibiotics only for bacterial infections. Viral and fungal infections cannot be cured with the help of the antibiotics. Antibiotics are prepared from the bacteria that have the antibacterial quality. This was first noted by the Sir. Alexander Fleming. Antibiotics began a new revolution in the field of medicines. No other medication was noted be as effective as antibiotics against the bacterial infections. Previously, people use to die because of the bacterial infections. But, now due to the use of the antibiotics deaths caused by the antibiotics are being considerably reduced. Antibiotics of different types have been noted to be discovered and are very effective against different bacterial infections.

It is strict warning from all the leading pharmaceutical association that, use antibiotics only for bacterial infections because if used for any other infections can lead to some severe infections. Antibiotics are taken only after confirming that you are suffering with the bacterial infection. For this the laboratory tests are done that makes it clear that which type of infection you are suffering with. Even doctors prescribe you the medications on the basis of these laboratory results. The problem of infections is becoming very common nowadays because of the unhealthy lifestyle that we are living. Sexually transmitted infections are the most common infections noted nowadays. Whatever may be the severity of infection you can cure it with the help of the antibiotics.

Bacteria are of two types aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic means bacteria that require air for survival and anaerobic bacteria are those that can survive without air. Both these bacteria can be cured with the help of the antibiotics. You can overcome the bacterial infections within 5 to 7 days with the help of the antibiotic drugs. Sometimes the timing may increase depending on the severity of infection and your overall health status. Remember that antibiotics are to be taken only as per the recommended dosage, if you take in excess it may result in the increases side effects. Regular excessive intake of bacterial infections may result in coma or sudden cardiac arrest.

Antibiotics are taken only for bacterial infections because if you take them when not required it may cause severe problems to your health. Remember you may also get some unwanted infection due to this type of unnecessary intake of antibiotics. These types of infections caused by the antibiotic medication are very difficult to cure and may cause permanent damage to your health. Antibiotics are recommended only for the bacterial infections any other health problems are not cured with the help of these medications. Many times we take it granted that what we are suffering with is bacterial infection and we take the previously prescribed antibiotics for it. But, this is where we put our health in more danger because it can not be confirmed just by visual appearance that which type of bacterial infection we are suffering with. So, please confirm this with laboratory tests and use antibiotics only for the bacterial infections.

Various Options for Crohn’s Disease

There are various treatment options for Crohn’s disease that include drugs, surgery, nutrition supplements or even a combination of these three options. Treatment for Crohn’s disease concentrates on controlling inflammation; relieve abdominal pain, rectal breeding and diarrhea and correcting nutritional deficiencies. The choice for treatment of Crohn’s disease depends on the location and severity of the disease, its complications and the patient’s response to previous medical treatments.By treating Crohn’s disease, it is possible to reduce and eliminate the inflammation associated with the disease. Aminosalicylates are effective in reducing the inflammation of the digestive tract lining. The active component of this drug is 5-aminosalicylic acid and is a common treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. It can be taken orally or rectally as an enema or suppository.

If 5-ASA is found to be ineffective, then corticosteroids are used to control the inflammation of Crohn’s disease. It is taken orally, intravenously or as an enema or suppository. However its continuous use leads to side effects like high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis. There may also be some fluid retention that leads to a swollen appearance of the face. However a new formulation of steroids, budesonide, has fewer side effects as there is less of blood absorption.The antibodies that are created by Crohn’s disease that attack the intestinal lining to cause inflammation in the intestinal lining, is suppressed using immunosuppressants. These drugs are taken orally, where results will not be seen for some weeks and months. This medicine creates side effects like nausea, diarrhea, infections and vomiting.Antidiarrheals are used to relieve chronic diarrhea while laxatives are used when there is a partial intestinal obstruction that leads to constipation.

However laxatives are not effective in completely treating intestinal obstruction. Though acetaminophen can be used to relieve pain due to Crohn’s disease, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen are not advised as only they tend to intensify symptoms.

Anemia that arises from Crohn’s disease is treated using iron supplements and vitamin B-12 injections. Sometimes antibiotics are use to treat infections from fistulas or surgery in the intestine. Surgery may be resorted to when there is an intestinal obstruction or when medications don’t prove successful in controlling Crohn’s disease. In fact, 70 percent of sufferers from Crohn’s disease need surgery at a point in their lives as the inflammations and ulcers that arise from Crohn’s disease go deep into the intestinal tissue.Surgery options for patients of Crohn’s disease include strictureplasty where narrowed areas of the digestive tract are widened. With bowel resection the diseased part of the intestine is removed. This may include a partial colectomy or ostomy to permit the passing of stools from the body. Infectious material is removed by draining abscesses.

With surgery, the symptoms of Crohn’s disease may disappear for some years. However there is a chance of the recurrence of symptoms which may lead to the patient undergoing another and subsequent operations. The recurrence of the symptoms is more common in patients with severe Crohn’s disease and in those where its symptoms occur outside the colon. However, using medications after the surgery may lead to a reduction in the recurrence of the symptoms.

Vitamin D

Introduction

One of the fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin D constitutes two major forms which are vitamin D2 or ergocalciferol and vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol. Vitamin D2 is synthesised by plants whilst vitamin D3 is synthesised by the body. Vitamin D is naturally present in a number of food sources and dietary supplements, and is also manufactured with the aid of sun exposure. It is produced within the body when ultraviolet-B or UVB rays from sunlight reaches the skin. The liver and the kidney eventually help to convert vitamin D to an active hormone form.

Functions of Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays several key roles in the maintenance of organ systems. For example:

* Vitamin D helps regulate calcium concentrations in the blood. Since it works more like a hormone, its active form, calcitriol acts with the parathyroid hormone or PTH. If the calcium level is low, this would trigger the secretion of PTH, which would stimulate the conversion of vitamin D to calcitriol. Calcitriol would then act to increase calcium absorption in the intestines, calcium resorption in the kidneys and stimulate calcium release from the bones.

* Vitamin D helps maintain blood phosphorus levels. Low levels of vitamin D can result to an overactive parathyroid gland. Also with inadequate phosphorus in the body, bones cannot undergo normal mineralisation.

* It is also said that vitamin D benefits the immune system since the T-cells or immune cells have receptors for vitamin D. It acts by boosting phagocytosis, the bodily functions to combat tumours, modulate neuromuscular and immune functions and reduce inflammation.

* Vitamin D is also responsible for maintaining normal cell growth and function. It may be an important element to the prevention and treatment of cancer. It has also been suggested that vitamin D plays a role in regulating the growth and function of brain cells.

* Research studies suggest that vitamin D, because of its anti-inflammatory effect, plays a role in providing protection against osteoporosis, hypertension, cancer, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis and numerous autoimmune diseases.

Deficiency Conditions

There may be certain underlying causes of vitamin D deficiency. It can result from:

* Inadequate vitamin D intake together with inadequate sun exposure

* Certain disorders that compromise vitamin D absorption

* Conditions that can impair the conversion of vitamin D metabolites such as kidney or liver diseases or hereditary disorders.

Insufficient vitamin D intake can have serious effects on the bones, which can make them thin, brittle or deformed. Vitamin D deficiency often results in conditions like:

* Rickets which is common in children and is characterised by delayed growth and deformity of long bones.

* Osteomalacia, which occurs in adults and results in thinning of the bones. Signs of proximal weakness and bone fragility are familiar characteristics.

* Osteoporosis which is a condition wherein the bone mineral density is reduced and bone fragility is increased.

<p>Lack of vitamin D may also be linked to increased susceptibility of several chronic diseases like high blood pressure, cancer, tuberculosis, periodontal disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, schisophrenia, depression, affective disorders, peripheral arterial disease and a number of autoimmune diseases such as type-1 diabetes.</p>

Deficiency Symptoms in Adults and Infants

Signs of vitamin D deficiency includes muscle aches, myopathy or muscle weakness and bone pain. These symptoms can occur at any age. Pregnant mothers who have vitamin D deficiency can also cause fetal deficiency.

In younger infants, rickets can produce a condition called craniotabes or softening of the skull. In older babies, rickets can impede or delay sitting and crawling and the closure of the fontanels; bossing of the infants’ skull and presence of costochondral thickening or what is referred to as ‘rachitic rosary’. Children with rickets aged 1-4 years old experience epiphyseal cartilage enlargements on the long bones and delayed walking. Older children and adolescents can experience pain upon walking and in worst cases it can result in ‘bowlegs’ or ‘knock-knees’.

Tetany that is caused by hypocalcemia may go along with vitamin D deficiency in infants and adults. This condition can lead to symptoms such as loss of feeling in the lip or tongue areas and the fingers, facial spasms, and at worst, seizures.

Recommended Daily Dose of Vitamin D

Doses or intake of vitamin D is determined according to age groups. These amounts are vital to maintain normal growth and bone health and also normal calcium metabolism in the body. The adequate intakes or AIs for vitamin D indicated are based on the supposition that the vitamin D is not synthesized by sunlight exposure.

From birth to age 13, the recommended AI for children is 5 mcg or 200 IU; for both males and females aged 14-50 years old, 5 mcg or 200 IU is needed; for both males and females aged 51-70 years of age, 10 mcg or 400 IU is required; both males and females reaching the age of 71 and up require 15 mcg or 600 IU of vitamin D. Pregnant and lactating mothers need 5 mcg or 200 IU of the vitamin.

Vitamin D Food Sources

Only a few food sources contain vitamin D. Best sources of vitamin D are fish meat and fish liver oils. There are also small amounts of vitamin D, in the form of vitamin D3, found in dairy products like cheese and egg as well as beef and liver. Some types of mushrooms also contain varying amounts of vitamin D2.

Common sources of vitamin D include the following:

* Cod liver oil

* Fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines

* Milk including non-fat, reduced fat, whole or vitamin D fortified

* Margarine

* Cereals

* Egg

* Beef liver

* Swiss cheese

* Fortified orange juice

* Fortified rice or soy beverage

The Need for Increased Amounts

Since obtaining sufficient amounts of vitamin D in the diet can be quite difficult, many people now consume vitamin D fortified foods in order to maintain a healthy dose of the vitamin. There are some groups however who need increased amounts of vitamin D:

* Breastfed infants because vitamin D cannot be supplied by breast milk alone

* Older people due to the fact that synthesis of vitamin D decreases with age and the ability of the kidney to convert vitamin D diminishes

* People with limited sun exposure especially those living in northern latitudes, those wearing robes or head covers or those with occupations that prevent them from having sun exposure

* People with dark skin as more skin pigments like melanin reduces the ability of the skin to produce vitamin D.

* People with fat malabsorption conditions such as Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, liver and celiac disease or patients who have undergone surgical removal of any part of the stomach or intestine.

* People who are obese. An increased amount of subcutaneous fat can snatch more of the vitamin D and somehow alter its release in the circulation.

Interaction of Vitamin D with Prescribed Drugs

Vitamin D supplements have the tendency to react with certain types of prescription medications. These include the following:

* Steroids or corticosteroid medications like prednisone which can cause decreased calcium absorption and also damage the vitamin D metabolism process.
* Weight-loss medications such as orlistat and cholesterol-lowering drugs like cholestyramine also decrease the absorption of vitamin D and other fat-soluble vitamins.
* Phenobarbital and phenytoin increases vitamin D metabolism and decreases calcium absorption.
